Bass Strait Sharks - fly and gear fishing

Makos & Blue Sharks

Catching sharks is a risky venture at any time, and targeting Mako sharks
in Bass Strait even more so. In Bass Strait - the passage of water between
the island state of Tasmania and mainland Australia - the crazy Tasmanians
catch ridiculously large sharks fishing in small trailer boats.

Peter Morse joins some local shark fishermen and uses fly and game tackle
to hook into some big angry toothy game fish . Turns out the Tasmanians
really know what they are doing and he experiences some great fishing.

*NB - Game tackle is used as well as fly tackle*

Gold on the Flats - sight casting Golden Trevally
Click here to preview Gold on the Flats clip

One of the highlights in the saltwater fly fisherman's journal is to walk along a pristine beach devoid of footprints, and to scan the shallow clear waters for signs of large, feeding fish. Peter Morse is taken to such a place by guide Mark Bargenquast, who recently put a client onto 19 fish in one day. Golden Trevally can be seen actively cruising the waters' edge, and feeding hard with their tails waving up to eighteen inches above the water surface as they snatch a morsel off the bottom. Different flies and techniques are needed depending on the actions and body language of the fish. Casts often need to be fast and accurate, and reels need plenty of backing.

SIGHT CASTING THREADFIN. The places where rivers meet the sea are rich in marine life - if you get there on the right tide. Peter Morse is taken to one such place by guide Mark Bargenquast to witness a spectacular sight that few, if any, of the waterways regular users have seen. ‘Matching the hatch’ is not an option when 100cm plus Threadfin Salmon are feeding on tiny jelly prawns. Sightfishing to make your heart stop, and speed to make the fly line boil water! Bonus - tying the ‘black and barred ’ fly.

Peter Morse and friends travel to the flats on the inside of the largest sand island in the world. This region is renowned for its variety of highly prized sportsfish due to the pristine habitat and vast bait schools. Witness exciting, visual flats action on indigenous Queenfish through the high tide, then head offshore on the falling tide to mix it with scad and tuna in a feeding frenzy. Peter always has a second outfit rigged and ready when fishing the saltwater, and his preparation bears fruit as he sight casts to a 30 pound Cobia. Hot action - great fun and great tips.
